第12回「カンナ秋のアートフェスティバル」が初の「鬼石芸術祭」となる

これは人々を結びつけ、鬼石の創造的なコミュニティを地域住民や訪問者に紹介する祭典です。芸術には異なる文化、世代、生活様式の間で架け橋を築く力があります。規模は小さいながらも、鬼石町は豊かな芸術的伝統を有し、様々な創造的職業から多くの才能ある人材を惹きつけ、彼らの活動の拠点として確立しています。近年、群馬県にあるこの町を訪れた200人以上の国際的なアーティストの中には、定住を選択した者もいます。

2026年、この祭りは12回目を迎え、より多様なグループ、職業、ジャンルを包含します。かつて「かんな秋のアート祭り」として知られた「鬼石芸術祭」は、その文化的領域内で人と場所を結びつけ、新たな関係性と空間を創出します。町の歴史と石を投げる鬼の伝説からインスピレーションを得て、日常生活を豊かにする芸術的コンテンツを創造します。フェスティバルは年間を通じて開催され、主なイベントは9月と10月に集中します。

 

Art builds bridges. Between cultures, generations, and ways of life — it connects what distance and difference might otherwise keep apart. Onishi is small, but its spirit is vast. Located in Gunma Prefecture, this town has long drawn artists from across the world, some arriving as visitors and staying as neighbours. For over a decade, the Onishi Art Festival has honoured that tradition — and in its 12th year, it grows bolder.

We believe creativity belongs to everyone. This festival is not for a select few. It welcomes wider circles of people — new professions, new genres, new voices — and opens the town's nature, streets, and stories to all who are curious enough to wander in.

We draw power from this place. Rooted in local heritage and the ancient legend of a stone-throwing demon, Onishi holds mysteries worth uncovering. Our artists are guides and translators, revealing worlds of imagination, to be emotional, sensual, to inspire us to dream and marvel.

We are here for the long term. The festival lives throughout the year, with its heartbeat strongest in September and October. Art is not an event. It is a way of inhabiting a place.

Formerly the Kanna Art Festival, we carry our history forward under a new name — the Onishi Art Festival — forging new relationships, new spaces, and new meaning from what already exists.

学校ワークショップ

フェスティバルのテーマは、地元の学校で様々なアーティストが指導する町の鬼伝説に関する一連のワークショップを通じて、地域社会に紹介されます。

The festival's theme will be introduced to the community through a series of drawing and mask making workshops about the town's Oni legend, led by various artists at local schools.

毎月開催されるイベントでは、廃墟や非日常的な空間で、地元アーティストの作品展示と海外の飲食が楽しめます。

Soiree – Yakai 夜会

From late spring through the height of summer, monthly gatherings will bring new life to unusual and long-abandoned spaces of Onishi. At each event, the work of local artists will be presented alongside international food and drinks, creating vibrant cultural exchanges where creativity, flavor, and community meet in unexpected settings.

9月の2つの金曜日に、現代アーティストが鬼石の公共空間を流動的なイベントベースの会場へと変貌させます。日本の都市の伝統に則り、伝統芸能のパフォーマンス、音楽（語り物）、怪談、工芸品店、屋台が並ぶ賑やかな夜市が娯楽を提供し、交流の場を創出します。

Fall:

Night art market - 夜市 Yoichi

On two Fridays in September, contemporary artists will transform Onishi's public spaces into living, event-driven environments. In the spirit of Japanese urban tradition, a vibrant night market will pulse through the town. Two or three vacant, adjacent spaces — former shops, forgotten interiors — will be given new life as pop-up galleries and stages. Through performance art, music, craft and street food, these reclaimed spaces will transform abandonment into atmosphere and strangers into a community.

夜に現れる妖怪たちが、この街に伝わる鬼の伝説を蘇らせる。浪曲（なにわぶし）や怪談に導かれ、妖怪たちが街を練り歩く。最終目的地であるシロオニアートセンターでは、衣装が展示の一部となる前に酒を酌み交わし踊りを競う。

Yokai Parade – 百鬼夜行 Hyakki Yagyō

In October, the Onishi Art Festival will open by transforming the streets into a “mysterious” stage for a Hyakki Yagyō. The night parade of a hundred demons is the cultural framework for Onishi's local myth of the stone-throwing demon The artists and residents will act as 'translators' for visitors, dissolving the boundary between Onishi's natural landscape and the realm of yōkai by weaving myth into everyday space. Blending regional history with bold contemporary expression, this immersive parade invites visitors to step inside a mystical spectacle, as the Night of the Demons reawakens the enduring legend of the town’s namesake, the Oni. Accompanied by, traditional Japanese narrative singing (浪曲 or 浪花節) and ghost stories 怪談, a group of demons will parade through the streets. At the final destination, the Shiro Oni Art Center, we will drink and dance before the costumes become part of the exhibition.

The exhibition: Beyond the Pale • 未踏の領域

タイトルである「Beyond the Pale（ビヨンド・ザ・ペイル）」は、かつて「境界線の外側」にある、未知で異質な場所を指す言葉として使われてきました。しかし、この展覧会が焦点を当てるのは「道徳」ではなく、「未知なるもの」そのものと、私たちがそれにどう向き合うかという姿勢です。

ここ鬼石（おにし）は、他とは違う特別な場所です。「石を投げた鬼」の伝説に名を由来するこの町には、文化的な変遷や自然環境の変化といった、幾重にも重なる物語が眠っています。

かつて「鬼」という言葉は、主流の文化から外れた「異質な存在」を指すために使われることもありました。その「鬼」の名を冠したこの町で、私たちは改めて問いかけます。「境界の外側に立つ」とは、本当はどういうことなのか。この展覧会は、そんな問いを共に考えるきっかけとなるはずです。

この展示は、ただ作品を並べるだけの「白いギャラリー」の枠を飛び出し、くつろげる「ラウンジ」と、新しい何かが生まれる「実験室」が混ざり合ったような、ワクワクする空間を目指しています。

「Beyond the Pale（ビヨンド・ザ・ペイル）」では、作品を一つひとつ切り離して見せるのではなく、一人ひとりが持つ「物語」を星座のようにつなぎ合わせます。そこにある意味は、誰かに教えられるものではなく、ものとものの間にある空間から、あなた自身が見つけ出すものです。

訪れる皆さんは、アーティストが作った庭や、美味しいものに癒されるオアシスを巡りながら、自分だけの「理想郷（ユートピア）」に浸ることができます。展示全体が「お社（やしろ）」や「お祭り（巡行）」をモチーフにしており、不思議な魅力と心からのリラックスを感じられる場所になっています。

美術だけでなく、文学、映像、音楽などが混ざり合い、時間の経過とともに表情を変えていく空間の中で、静かに耳を澄ませ、好奇心を刺激されるひとときを過ごしてください。あわせて行われるパフォーマンスは、日常の忙しさを忘れ、ゆっくりとこの体験を心に刻むための招待状です。

「Beyond the Pale」は、決められた正解を提示する場所ではありません。未知のものを温かく迎え入れ、アーティストと観客の境界が溶け合って、みんなで作り上げていく「ひらかれた場」なのです。

The exhibition: Beyond the Pale • 未踏の領域

The title 'Beyond the Pale' refers to a historical idiom used to describe certain territories with different moral codes, outside of proper norms and considered unfamiliar. This exhibition, however, is not about morality, but about the unknown and the ways we respond to it.

Because Onishi is different. Named after a stone-throwing demon and located in rural Gunma, the town's history reveals layered stories of cultural displacement and ecological transformation. As the term oni (鬼) was once used to label those seen as alien to the dominant culture, it invites us to reconsider what it truly means to stand 'Beyond the Pale'.

The exhibition will take place in a former sake brewery that is currently being converted into the Shiro Oni Art Centre. This spacious area is set to become a creative hub where architecture and art converge. It is hosted by Kjell Hahn, the founder of Shiro Oni Studio and its residency programme.

The curated exhibition challenges the neutrality of the white cube gallery by creating a vibrant atmosphere that is part lounge and part laboratory. Rather than presenting isolated artworks, Beyond the Pale stages a constellation of individual mythologies, where meaning is not declared but discovered in the spaces between things. Visitors are invited to immerse themselves in an atmosphere of private utopias, punctuated by moments of contemplation in culinary oases and artist-made gardens. The exhibition is structured around the motifs of shrines and processions to create spaces of enchantment and deep relaxation. Visitors find places of silence and conscious listening amid artworks that stimulate curiosity, by blending fine arts with literature, video and music, which will transform the spatial setting over time. An accompanying program of performances complements this invitation to slow down and fully embrace the transformative power of the experience. Beyond the Pale is not a final statement, but an open field where the unknown is welcomed and the boundary between artist and audience dissolves into participation.
