Elementary school students, now and then

In 2023, the Kanna Autumn Art Festival was held at Yuzurihara Elementary School for the first time. During the preparation phase, I came across a large painting of numerous birds displayed on the hallway wall, and was deeply moved by its peaceful and relaxed charm. I removed it from the wall with the intention of preserving it, but the background paper had deteriorated over time and crumbled. However, the images of the birds, which had been drawn on drawing paper, cut out, and pasted onto the paper, remained in my possession. In the summer of 2025, I called on the current elementary school students in Kanna to create a forest where these birds could return. Just as the former elementary school students had carefully studied pictorial books to draw the birds, I asked the current students to carefully examine photographs and pictorial books of real trees and draw one tree each. By connecting these trees to form a forest, a forest where the birds could return was created, and here, the story of the birds and the trees' forest begins anew.
