In memory of Chiaki Horikoshi 堀越千秋 (1948–2016)—the central artistic figure of Onishi and founder of the festival—we will establish a centre for art and movement. A passionate flamenco singer and painter, Horikoshi-san spent much of his life in Spain, building cultural bridges through his work. To honour this legacy, a former Japanese brothel (張り見世), will be transformed into a space dedicated to art and movement. Through workshops, residencies, and collaborative projects, the centre will foster a culture of communication, curiosity, and shared practice rooted deeply in this unique place.
かつて日本の遊郭であった大西の「張り見世」が、ムーブメント（身体技法）の拠点へと生まれ変わります。このセンターは、ワークショップ、レジデンス、共同プロジェクトを通じて、この場所ならではの歴史に根ざした、対話、好奇心、そして共に実践する文化を築くことを目指しています。
A Centre for Movement in rural Onishi, Gunma
As rural Japan continues to experience depopulation and ageing demographics, a growing international community of artists has settled in Onishi, Gunma. Drawn by its landscape, slower rhythms, and openness to experimentation, we propose to establish a Centre for Movement, a new performing arts initiative.
Our aim is to revitalise underused traditional buildings by transforming them into a space for embodied research, intercultural collaboration, and community engagement through the performing arts.
The centre is conceived not as a closed institution, but as a membrane between interior practice and the surrounding landscape, and as an interface between our international artistic community and the local people who have shaped this place.
We seek to bridge traditional Japanese performance practices and contemporary experimental work. To this end, we will invite professional performing artists to collaborate with local practitioners of Butoh, Kagura 神楽, Chanbara 剣劇, and Kabuki – artforms that carry within them centuries of physical and philosophical knowledge. Alongside them, local musicians working across a wide range of genres will bring further texture and dialogue to the program.
鬼石の田舎から、身体技法の新たな拠点を。
日本の過疎化や高齢化が進む一方で、群馬県鬼石には海外からアーティストが集まり、新たなコミュニティが形成されています。この地の豊かな自然、ゆったりとした時間、そして実験的な試みを受け入れる土壌に惹かれ、私たちは舞台芸術の新たなイニシアチブとして「ムーブメント・センター」を設立します。
私たちの目的は、活用されていない伝統的な建物を、舞台芸術を通じた「身体的リサーチ」「多文化共生」「地域交流」の場へと再生させることです。
このセンターは、閉ざされた施設ではありません。内部での実践と周囲の風景をつなぐ「膜」であり、国際的なアーティスト・コミュニティと、この地を形作ってきた地域住民とをつなぐ「インターフェース」でありたいと考えています。
また、日本の伝統芸能と現代の実験的な表現の架け橋となることを目指します。そのために、プロの舞台芸術家を招き、舞踏、神楽、剣劇、歌舞伎といった、数百年にわたる身体的・哲学的知恵を宿した伝統芸能の担い手との協働を推進します。さらに、多様なジャンルの地元ミュージシャンも加わり、プログラムにさらなる深みと対話をもたらします。

Two non-Japanese artists with a focus on contemporary dance will be invited for a two week residency to engage with local residents, and provide them with new discoveries, inspiration, and opportunities for interaction through their art.
They will collaborate with performance director Julia Valencia and local Japanese artists to present the outcomes of the creative process at the Onishi Art Festival.

We are seeking moving images of moving bodies — works in which gesture, presence, and physicality communicate within public space.
The Onishi Art Festival invites submissions of short performance videos for a site-specific screening programme during the 2026 festival in Onishi, Japan.
